Once you get the required loads from the appropriate building code, "Residential Structural Design Guide: 2000 Edition" gives a basic step by step review of how & why they are used. Here is a link to the free .pdf download of this 430+ page book

Wood Frame Construction Manual for One & two-Family Dwellings (1995 SBC High Wind Edition) is an excellent reference also "Design of Wood Structures" - 3rd edition or newer is also an excellent reference. You might also look into the NDS for Wood Construction.
Hope those help.

Sounds like you need some higher education or hire someone to do this work!

RE: how to find the loads from roof to foundation for design

A good text is "Loads and Load Paths in Buildings: Principles of Structural Design" by Narenda Taly, and published by the ICC (International Code Council).  It is a very good introductory text and more.

Geez, SlideRuleEra!  Is there anything for which you don't have a reference or a link?

Thanks for making so much available to all of us.

Thanks crossframe. I seem to have a "knack" for finding things. My wife says that it is because I "think like a search engine".

Thanks SlideRuleEra, Good reference, I have a young EIT who should put some portions of this to good use. Like all of us, there are some areas of the practice which need some work. I understand the apparent frustration of structengineer. I also remember some of the things both my brother and I did which made my father wonder if our brains were in gear.
