Does heat treat effect the stiffness of 4140 type material?

Does heat treat effect the stiffness of 4140 type material?

(OP)

I am trying to calculate the deflections when a 4140 bar is loaded.

Do the properties change when it is heat treated to around 35 Rc?

I am guessing I would adjust the Youngs Modulus.

any suggestions?

RE: Does heat treat effect the stiffness of 4140 type material?

No, for al practical uses the young modulus does not change therefore the stiffness does not change.

RE: Does heat treat effect the stiffness of 4140 type material?

Young's Modulus will not change with heat treatment. Other mechanical properties like ultimate tensile, yield strength and ductility (% elongation) will change with corresponding heat treatment.

I would use the standard beam formula to determine deflection. In general, the geometry of the beam (cross section) will have the greatest affect on deflection.

RE: Does heat treat effect the stiffness of 4140 type material?

No, there shouldn't be a noticable change.
Some alloys, like the PH grades do change modulus when aged, but not this type of material.

Corrosion never sleeps, but it can be managed.
