RE: offshore drilling equipment

try http://www.howstuffworks.com/oil-drilling.htm for a very basic (but well illustrated) introduction to the drilling process.

Offshore drilling equipment is exactly like onshore drilling equipment apart from a couple of items that cope with the fact that the floating rig offshore goes up & down and side to side.  So there are hydraulic pistons between the hook and the swivel so that the swivel can stay stationary while the rig moves up & down, and the BOP is put on the sea bed, with a riser pipe runnig from the BOP to the rig, with a flex joint and telescopic joint at the top, which account for the movement of the floating rig.
