Solid to Surface

Solid to Surface

I have customer who can't import my solidmodel because of its 68mb size.  I've cleaned the file up so that all dangling surfaces and solid have been deleted.  Is there anyway to turn this solid into surfaces?  This is complex model with very complicated pattern, so therefore knitting each surface is not practicle.  I tried clicking the single body with the knit feature, but didn't work.  Suggestion on how to reduce file size?

RE: Solid to Surface

Can you post a picture?

RE: Solid to Surface

Place it into an assembly and save it as a part. Pick Exterior Faces. Open it up as a part and you should have nothing but surfaces.

Be aware surfaces my make it larger instead of smaller.

My customer wants me to send him a wireframe, which I think for him means just the surfaces.  He is a bit confusing when throws words around.  Wireframe in my world means something to do with the Viewing of the model, not a format to send to him.

RE: Solid to Surface

Interesting idea, Scott.

At my last job the QC department needed wireframe curve models for CMM setup.

IGES works well for this.  Under the Save As options for IGES, select/deselect the following:
solid/surface entities -- OFF
wireframe (3D curves) -- ON

Wireframe models like this can also be helpful for double-checking translations, i.e. to make sure all surfaces trimmed as expected.

What program is your customer importing data into?

I could be the world's greatest underachiever, if I could just learn to apply myself.

Thanks guys.  I ended up paying for a translation to CATIA.

RE: Solid to Surface

Mathdata.com is my favored source for that.

I'm using PS_Exchange and it's voucher system.  Seems to work well.
