ASCE 7 Wind - Simplified vs. Analytical

ASCE 7 Wind - Simplified vs. Analytical

ASCE 7 Wind - Simplified vs. Analytical

(OP)
I an looking at a big box retail store with a 22' roof height and 8' parapets above.  I do not see anything in ASCE 7-02, part 6.4.1.1 that prohibits me from using the simplified method.  The wind loads would simply be placed on the vertical and horizontal projections of the building.

If I use the Analytical method and apply the the "Low-rise Walls & Roof" provisions shown on Figure 6-10 the MWFRS wall loads are comparable to the Simplified Method, but I believe I still apply the wind loads from part 6.5.12.2.4 to the parapets.

Since my parapets are 8' tall, the parapet loads for windward and leeward parapets are HUGE.  So, is there anything reason I can't use the simplified method? And looking at the Analytical Method and applying the "Low-Rise Walls & Roof" provisions, am I applying the correct parapet load?

RE: ASCE 7 Wind - Simplified vs. Analytical

I would say you can use the simplified method for designing the MWFRS, but I would suggest using the long method for designing the parapet framing (it would be considered components and cladding).
