Using favorites when using the hole wizard

Using favorites when using the hole wizard

Using favorites when using the hole wizard

(OP)
I just noticed that you can't use favorites when using the hole wizard. Thats not good. If you dimension a dowel hole with the regular dimension tool, you can use favorites (i.e. fits). But if you use the hole wizard (for when you have 12 holes and you want it to say 12X in front of it then your fit) you can't use favorites.

Hope someone understands what I mean. Where can I email solidworks a suggestion?

RE: Using favorites when using the hole wizard

If I understand correctly you created a dowel hole using the hole wizard which has 12 holes in the feature. You then go to the drawing and try to save the dimension as a favorite. Correct?? Please try to explain further or post a pic to clarify what you are trying to save as a favorite.

To submit a suggestion to Solidworks go to the SW website and do a search for "Enhancement Request" You may need to log in with your serial number to get access

ok, I will post a picture up tommorrow when I get back to work.

you are correct. I make 12 holes using hole wizard. Then I want to dimension them with a "favorite" for the fits and such but when you use the "hole callout" you are unable to use any favorites and have to do it by hand every time.

Another issue I found is that the numbers that solidworks uses for the hole and shaft fits are for regular steel. Almost all of our steel gets hardened. Therefore the tolerances would be slightly different. If the hole was made to MMC and the shaft was made to MMC, the hardended steel would split and break. It would be fine if the block with the hole in it wasn't hardened.

I am sorry if I am being confusing. I guess its sorta hard to describe.

Nevermind... I have just determined that the press fit hole standard in solidworks is only good if you use the press fit shaft equiviant.

For example - I make a .3125 hole and tell solidworks its a pressfit hole. I would like to use an FN2 fit for that (medium press fit) which is an H7 for the hole. I dimension the hole and tell solidworks its an H7 hole and it gives it a +.0006 -.0000 tolerance. The dowel standard is +.0002-.0000. With the soildworks standard, the dowel would slip right thru the hole and not be a press fit.

But, if make a shaft to go in the hole I made and dimension that, it is +.0014 +.0010 (it gives it a ++ tolerance) and that would create a good press fit for that shaft in the hole if it was regular (non hardened steel).

I don't really like them numbers from the machinery handbook. With the above example.. there is the possibility of creating a press fit that has .0014 of interference! And that is just a medium press fit (FN2). We have decided not to use that mach. handbook or solidworks numbers. Too bad too because that could be a really awesome feature of solidworks.
