Cylinder block machining dimensions question

Cylinder block machining dimensions question

Cylinder block machining dimensions question

(OP)
First, I apologize for this not being an engineering question.  Please don't red-flag me.

I have been unable to find bluprint dimensions for big block Chevrolet Mark IV (454, 7.4L) engine machining.  I need crank to cam distance, various bore sizes, cam follower bore positions, cylinder bore centers, main bearing cap dimensions, etc.  Can someone point me to this information?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Cylinder block machining dimensions question

There were some hot-rod publications that had these for the small block, so they must be available for the big block. You know, those books like "how to build a small block racing engine" or "how to rebuild your small block."

RE: Cylinder block machining dimensions question

Stroker, the older chevy power racing books had blueprint dimensions. I have one somewhere, I will look, but dont hold your breath, I havent seen it for at least 20 years. The one I had was circa 1972.

Perhaps you could check with your local dealer, if they still publish it, or check Ebay.

RE: Cylinder block machining dimensions question

Depending on what dimensions you need you might need more than one of the Chevy Power Books. Some time ago I modeled part of a Gen 1 SBC from those books and found that some drawings and dimensions were included in some books and not others.

Some of the bearing bore dimensions are provided in the bearing supplier catalogs tha rebuilders use.

Here are some dimensios fro Big Block Chev:

Bore Spacing: 4.840
Crank to Cam 5.15 (ref)
Deck Ht. 9.8 & 10.2
Block Top 10.75 & 11.03

The distributor hole position is on an angle and more difficult to explain.

Let me know other dimensions you need, I will post them if I have them.

Jonathan,

I received my Chevy Power book and it has some Big Chevy dimensions but could use some more detail.

One item missing that I need is any dimensions relevant to machining the main bore and cap registers for installing aftermarket main caps.  I can figure it out from the parts but it would be nice to know what the original design intent was.

I don't have any immediate plans for lifter bores but details for them would also be helpful.  The Chevy power book gives a position but no information on angles.

Thanks in advance!
