Telltale in Pile load test

Telltale in Pile load test

(OP)
Just wondering what peoples thoughts were on including telltales in a pile load test.  I am planning to test 12 inch dia 60' deep auger cast piles to failure (ultimate design 160 kips).  I was planning to in stall 2 telltales on mid depth and the other 3 feet from the bottom.  Any lesson learned or useful hints.

RE: Telltale in Pile load test

Good way to check your analytical assumptions of friction and end bearing.

RE: Telltale in Pile load test

Instead of telltales, which can be very difficult to install, you might want to install strain gauges.  You get the same information and installation can be easier, however, there is not such thing as an easy installation in a 12-inch ACP!
