catalytic converter

I've had my check engine light on for a little while now...I took it to the shop and they scanned it...The computer said I needed a catalytic converter.  So I had it replaced.  How long does it usually take for the new converter to reset the check engine light?

Thanks!

RE: catalytic converter

The people who did the work should have re-set your check engine light for you. What Codes did the ECU give to show that the cat was bad? Teh standard one is rear catylitc inefficiency.

I am not sure what the code was...but when I picked up my car the light was out...I drove it approx 30 miles and it came back on....I was told that it takes a bit for the new cat to reset.

RE: catalytic converter

Nope, they should have road tested it and seen that the CEL popped back on. If you go to a place like Autozone, (and maybe others) they can read your OBDII computer and see what code you're thowing, I had at one time a list of the possible code#'s and what they mean. Post what code you're throwing and I'll see whta I can tell you.

RE: catalytic converter

Somehow I doubt that they would have driven it the 30 miles that it took to come back on.  Lengthy drives like that are saved for doing what's necessary to put the OBDII in full readiness status, as is required in many places to pass the smog test.  Otherwise, it's "just around the block".  Even tieing up an $8/hr gofer/lot attendant/customer shuttle driver for test drives is watched in many places.
