About additional requirements for Bolted Splice

About additional requirements for Bolted Splice

Hi Fellows

There is a question about the AISA (Australian) Design of structural connection 4th edition, 4.10 Bolted Splice Connection, p140, Double column of bolts. The addition requirements for end plate tearout, for the requirement V*mh + V*mb <= 0.9(ae5 ti fui ), should V*mb be V*hb? this equation is at the 4th line from bottom.

Thank you for your time

RE: About additional requirements for Bolted Splice

You're probably right.  There is no V*mb shown on the bolt forces diagram, Figure 4.10.5.2(B), V*mh and V*hb are bolt forces in the direction in the same plane and V*mh and V*hb are used in the three subsequent formulas.

Hi dbuzz

Also, I have a questionfor the equation under the above one, 2(V*mh + V*hb)<=0.9(ae4 tw fuw), where the 2 come from, why need to times 2.

Thank you

You are indeed correct, this is one of the errors picked up in the 'Corrigenda' (?) issued in March 03. It should be available from the ASI website, www.steel.org.au
