Several companies here in the United States (Leviton, for one) make what is called an "occupancy sensor". This device normally mounts in a standard switch box, which would of course be mounted near a door leading into the room in question. This sensor can tell when there are people in the room and will keep the lights on until the last person leaves. Depending upon the sophistication of the sensor, some have time off delays and other programmable features. Check out www.leviton.com for more information. There are also devices that send signals over the electrical lines that utilize "smarthome" technology, where various devices can "talk" to each other or to a central control unit - this can get as complex as you want. A good source for these devices is www.smarthome.com; they will send you a catalog with some fairly good information - the web site is informative as well.
