Intermittant Helix Cut

Intermittant Helix Cut

Intermittant Helix Cut

(OP)
Hi all - its me again with another Helix question. In this instance I have drawn a variable pitch Helix (it transitions from a start pitch to an end pitch along its length). I want to sweep along this line but I'd like to have gaps in the sweep (i.e. I'd like it to sweep for 10mm, stop for 5mm and restart for another 10mm etc.) The amount of gaps could be 40 or 50 so having 40 or 50 different helix drawings is not a good solution. I also considered drawing one helix and then extruding the first 'gap' and using a pattern along a curve to continue the 40/50 gaps. However, it won't allow me to use my helix curve as the pattern curve. Anyone have any ideas?

RE: Intermittant Helix Cut

You would either have to make multiple helixes with the gaps, or make cuts in the helix once it's complete. There is no way to skip areas when make a Sweep feature.

I thought as much. Can you use the spline that created the helix as a curve on which to pattern the 'cut'? I couldn't get this idea to work.

RE: Intermittant Helix Cut

Couldn't you extrude the entire helix and fill in (or cut out) the gaps.  For example, if you have a spiral cut on the outside of a cylinder.  After you make the helix, reextrude the cylinder in the places you don't want the helix.

RE: Intermittant Helix Cut

Create a 3dsketch and convert entities on the helix. You can use that for your curve driven pattern path.
