UW16 (c)(2)(a)

Is anyone aware of any exceptions to the rule stated here concerning the minimum fillet weld ( 1/2t)?
thanks,

RE: UW16 (c)(2)(a)

The minimum weld throat is calculated using:

tc = 0.25 or 0.7 * (t min)
(use the smaller)

where (tmin ) is 0.75 * the thinner of t or tn

RE: UW16 (c)(2)(a)

weldtek;
What is your application for asking this question? I reviewed Figure 16.1 sketches (a-1), (h) and UW-16 (c) 2. It seems clear to me with no real exceptions for attachment of separate repad plates. I will check any Code cases.

RE: UW16 (c)(2)(a)

(OP)
I have a 2.5" wall vessel, with a 2" thick repad.
This paragraph indicates that a 1.25" throat is required, say ~ 1.75" fillet, but, it calcs ok with a much smaller fillet, ~ .625".  I agree that the paragraph is very clear, but, there's quite a difference between what compress says is ok and what this paragraph calls for.  I'm wondering if there any exceptions to the rule.

Feeling like 'Dork' here, I realize that the paragraph is calling for 1/2 of ('tmin') not 't'  min.  Sorry.

RE: UW16 (c)(2)(a)

weldtek , what about naming the paragraph?,seems to me that you only need 1 in fillet

GenB
Can you clarify?

RE: UW16 (c)(2)(a)

Code paragraph!
where did you get the "minimum fillet weld ( 1/2t)?"

RE: UW16 (c)(2)(a)

GenB;
See Section VIII, Div 1 Part UW-16 (c) (2)

RE: UW16 (c)(2)(a)

I red the par. and 1" throat is required or 1/2Tmin (Tmin of 2") and there are any excemption to this rule.
I would not ask for more since the rule is already giving alowances.

RE: UW16 (c)(2)(a)

(OP)
UW16(C)(2)(a)was the paragraph in question as noted in the heading of the original post, and, which pertains to the fillet weld at the outer edge of a reinforcing pad.  It calls for a fillet with a minimum throat of 1/2tmin.  I had mistaken this for 1/2 of t, min.  UW16(b) lists the symbols and their meaning, and says that tmin is ' the smaller of 3/4" or the thinner of the parts joined by a fillet...'  In our case 3/4" is smaller than the plates attached by fillet welds, so, 1/2 of 3/4" is 3/8"/.707" = ~17/32".  In our case we had used a 5/8" fillet, which was more than adequate.
