Wind Deisgn Speed in the Middle East

Wind Deisgn Speed in the Middle East

(OP)
We are working on the structural design for a conveyor system that will be setup in Qatar (small country in the Middle East). Our client gave us a number for the wind design speed but we need to confirm that it is accurate.  Does anyone know how we can get this information?

RE: Wind Deisgn Speed in the Middle East

I'm just guessing but:

The Qatari government probably has some sort of Dept. of the Interior or something similar that may have data such as that. They may also have a national meteorlogical agency.

Try giving a call to the embassy or consulate to get started.

You might also ask your customer for the source of their data.

You might find a national university or something that may have data, too.

RE: Wind Deisgn Speed in the Middle East

Per MIL Handbook 1002-2A, wind speeds for Bahrain, which is an Island right of Qatar; it lists the following wind speeds:

Peak Gust Velocity of 81 MPH or 36 M/S

It lists the same speeds for Saudi Arabia as well. I think it is a good place to start unless approved by some competent authority.

Qatar is a peninsula and I would say it is very close to Bahrain.

when I said Bahrain was right of Qatar, I meant it is off the west coast of Qatar.

RE: Wind Deisgn Speed in the Middle East

I worked on a job in Qatar four years ago - I don't have the wind data anymore but Lufti's 36m/s is about right. Design codes in Qatar were typically British Standards, this included the wind code, which was the old UK code CP3 Chapter V. Not BS 6399 Part 2. If the wind data given to you is significantly lower than 36m/s the Qataris may have adopted the principles of BS 6399, in which case you need to know the assumed method of deriving forces from the raw wind speed data. Your client should be able to supply the necesary information.

Please also be aware that Qatar is very hot and humid with a highly agressive atmosphere. Our designs have top specification paint systems and the concrete foundations were designed fro 0.1mm crack widths and were tanked to avoid contact with the ground.

RE: Wind Deisgn Speed in the Middle East

I'm working in Dubai & we using 45 m/s as a basic wind speed.
it's the municipality Building Regulations but i think it's less than that in reality.

it's better to check with the muncipility there my be they have a referance speed.

Thanks for the information.

RE: Wind Deisgn Speed in the Middle East

I've done a lot of work in Qatar. They always request a basic wind speed of 45m/s(100 miles/hour).
