oil pump relief valve

(OP)
please explain the functioning of the relief valve in a typical wet sump V8 oil pump(BBC). Does increasing spring pressure only affect the max pressure at which the pump goes into relief or does it change the entire pressure "curve"?

RE: oil pump relief valve

It raises the pressure when the valve begins to open.

RE: oil pump relief valve

The automotive oil pump is positive displacement.  If the volume at a given viscosity generates a resultant pressure in excess of the pressure relief setting, flow is shunted to either the suction side of the pump ..or back to the sump.
