Removing Solid Waste From Railcars

Removing Solid Waste From Railcars

Removing Solid Waste From Railcars

(OP)
I am working on a problem of getting municipal solid waste out of a railcar (65 tons lets say). My guess is these will be gondolla cars. I have come across a "tipper" in Roanoke and a "rotator" in Utah but these seem to be the only solutions I can find as I cross the web. Anyone have any other ideas on how to unload railcars of municipal solid waste in a quick and easy manner? Potentially, this could amount to thousands of railcars a year so "by hand" is not an option.
TIA, Randy

RE: Removing Solid Waste From Railcars

Hey Pickle,

Rotary dump is probaby your best option.  You could also unload it with a crane, but you still have to clean the car.  A text on bulk materials handling would probably cover the topic in more detail.  You could also check the web sites of Svedala Dravo Wellman Company and FMC.  FMC's link is below.

PICKLE2:  Wildor has a good recommendation, this system is used in some coal fired power palnts.  you may also want to consider "bottom dump" cars.  The bottom opens up and the stuff drops out.

You will also need front end loaders to keep the waste under the car moving.

Dave

RE: Removing Solid Waste From Railcars

There is a less expensive way than purchasing a carhoe or car tipper.  There is a company called Pneumat Systems out of Mankato, MN that has a railcar drill and whip system.  It has a drill that works like a drill press that sits on top of the car to make a hole down to the bottom.  Then you set up the whip machine on top of it.  It eats at like a big weed eater.  Sometimes all the product will fall out without even using the whip.  It is an alternative.
