Not showing secondary level revision on drawing

Not showing secondary level revision on drawing

Not showing secondary level revision on drawing

(OP)
Hello,

First time posting on this forum, been lurking for about a year.  I would like to say this is a great community you have here.  You have no idea how many times this place has helped me.  In this case, I can't seem to find, or maybe not searching correctly, the solution to my problem.

Here goes. We have set up our PDMWorks to control our revision table on our drawings.  My company wants both model/assy and drawing to have the same rev.  When we are in the prototype phase our revision structure is as follows 01-001, primary and secondary respectably.  Our drawing shows this same structure in the revision table.  Is there a way to make PDSWorks understand that we only want to show the primary revision on the table and not the secondary?  I usually can find answers on my own, but on this one I’m stuck, so I’m reaching to the SW community for help.  Thanks for reading.

RE: Not showing secondary level revision on drawing

Seems to me you are asking two questions, how to show revs on rev table and how to show in PDMW.
Your PDMAdmin will have to setup how PDMW works with rev's. Revision blocks on dwgs, you just type in the rev.
Maybe I'm not clear what you are asking.

No, actually just one question.

Ok, the administrator has set up PDMworks to drive the drawing revision table.  On the drawing it shows both the primary and secondary revision level, we don't want that, we only want to show the primary level.  But we still want PDMWorks to drive the revision change on the drawing, with out having to type in manually.

Unfortunately, our administrator is not a very good one, really never used solidworks.  She's in charge of DocControl, so the company assumed she should be the PDMWorks admin, bad call.  So whenever some one can't figure out how something is done, they come to me. It's fun!

Thanks!

RE: Not showing secondary level revision on drawing

I think you can only drive one revision. This is based on standards. Whatever the revision is on the dwg is what it should be in PDMW, they should always match.

RE: Not showing secondary level revision on drawing

Can you just add an additional Database filed? Maybe one for ProtoRev and one for Rev?

Or break the Rev into to values...the primary and the secondary? Then you'd have to somehow tell SW to display the revision of [primary "-" secondary]?

Just a couple ramblings.

Hmmm, it seems my question is being confused.  I want to the SW to only display the primary revision on the drawing, not the secondary.  How do I do this?

Right know, under the revison block, I get 1-001 ("primary" - "secondary")

RE: Not showing secondary level revision on drawing

You only get one revision in the rev block. Your revision IS 1-001. SolidWorks, PDMWorks, Windows, or other companies do not see it as "primary-secondary" revisions.
For your company, you will have to dbl-click the revision and manually type the rev. It is not per ASME/ANSI standards.

RE: Not showing secondary level revision on drawing

In the vault admin on the Revision Table tab is a Rules for revisions section.  Have your admin select the primary box only and uncheck the others.  Mind you, only the primary revision will show and update on the drawing.  I haven't tested if the notes will update, but it will be documented in the vault.  We don't use secondary revisions here.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

RE: Not showing secondary level revision on drawing

eRallyMan,
I understand exactly what you want. I have been searching for the same answer.
ANSI does not in any way allow for the display of a secondary revision.
I do not know of any other PDM solution that does not allow tracking a version change of the same primary revision.
In the case of PDMWorks, the secondary revision is the only way to manage. Overwrite of the vault file is not accepatble.
If you came up with thoughts or suggeations, please post.

Thanks
