unable to login to PDMWorks vault

unable to login to PDMWorks vault

unable to login to PDMWorks vault

(OP)
All of our users are unable to login to our PDMWorks vault as of today.  I have checked the server where the vault is located and the service is running.

If I attempt to log in to PDMWorks Vault Admin, I get:

VAULT ERROR: 1005
Could not validate user. "Login" aborted!

Attempting to log into the vault through Solidworks gives:

Could not login to PDMWorks.
User "dgowans" not found.

On this login form, if I hit the button which brings up the "Select User" dialog box, I get an empty list.

I have a sinking feeling that our vault has become corrupted, but I'd like any input before I restore from backup.

Any help would be most appreciated.

RE: unable to login to PDMWorks vault

Did you check with your VAR support? Call them first.
It may also be network/server fault.
You may need to stop/restart the vault.

I've checked with our VAR - still waiting to hear back.

I get the same error when trying to log into PDMWorks Vault admin when I'm physically at the server, even after starting/stopping the PDMWorks service and rebooting the server.

RE: unable to login to PDMWorks vault

The more files you have in PDM, the longer it takes to link the files. Then you can log back in after a full reboot. It takes us 1 hour 12 minutes after a restart for us.

Bradley,

Just out of curiosity, what is the size of your VaultData folder?  I'm just wondering whether this is the issue or not.  I'm guessing not, because of the fact that I can't see a list of users during login.

RE: unable to login to PDMWorks vault

Dave,
Our vault is 8.31 GB at 36,084 files with 8,713 folders.
Try using the original PDMWorks password

RE: unable to login to PDMWorks vault

If you stop the service and/or reboot the server, you must wait for the tree to rebuild. You cannot get into the VaultAdmin or login until this function is finished rebuilding.

Very well said Scott, that what I was trying to say. A star for you.

Update - our VAR contacted Solidworks with this issue.  Solidworks suggested updating the vault to the latest service pack.

Upon doing this, I can get into VaultAdmin as pdmwadmin and I can get into the vault from a client machine using the PDMWorks client or VaultAdmin.

Here's the issue now - all of our user information is gone, and I believe the PDMWorks settings in VaultAdmin have been reset to the defaults.  Is there any way I can restore just these items?  Fortunately, all of our vault data appears to be intact, although I've not done extensive checking yet.

Thanks,
Dave Gowans

RE: unable to login to PDMWorks vault

I would say no you can't restore that information, because I think it is stored in a text file and uninstalling and reintalling  the Admin might have removed that file. I wouldn't think it would, but if PDMworks doesn't see it then I'm willing to bet it's gone. Because there is no way that I know of for you to read a file into the Vault Admin.

Just out of curiosity, where might that text file be located?  If I knew where to look for it, I could possibly restore it from backup if it resides within the VaultData folder if it is just a text file that PDMWorks reads.

I might have to go back a few days, because one of the issues we were having prior to updating the service pack was that  our users were getting the "User not found." error upon attempting to login.

All this being said, I might be inclined to just re-enter our user information and the vault options in order to not completely hose up the whole vault.

Thanks,

RE: unable to login to PDMWorks vault

I wasn't sure if there was a text file I was thinking there was. Upon looking in the directory I don't see one. However if you look in the Vaultdata folder you will see a folder called "pdmrc" - There should be 2 folders one is your groups etc... if you don't have any of that data there or anything in them, then it was removed for what ever reason. Since you didn't make a backup of the vault prior, then all is lost. You should always make a backup before updating anything, especially your Vault and the Vault Admin. That includes and SP upgrade.

RE: unable to login to PDMWorks vault

Dave,
The file is:

"your server" :\VaultData\pdmrc\users.pdmw

This file is encrypted now, in the beginning it was not. You can open it with notepad. Just do not change anything. Your IT guys may have you and everyone else locked out from seeing this folder.

No backup! Who said anything about not doing a backup?

I can retrieve our users.pdmw from backup to restore our user settings - is there a similar file that will restore the options from VaultAdmin?

Thanks,
Dave Gowans

RE: unable to login to PDMWorks vault

Try looking in the same location and opening them in Notepad as Bradley showed you above. If you find it then you have your answer.

I never said you didn't make a backup, I was just pointing out if you didn't your SOL.
