Refrigeration Machinery Room Requirement Triggered by Retrofit?

Refrigeration Machinery Room Requirement Triggered by Retrofit?

Refrigeration Machinery Room Requirement Triggered by Retrofit?

(OP)
A client (department store in California) has a built-up system in a mezzanine-level equipment room. The compressors are at mezzanine level, and the (two) condensers are on the roof.

The project I’m working on involves removing the two existing condensers and compressors and replacing them with two rooftop condenser/compressor combination units.

The new units will be 60 tons and 100 tons.

Chapter 11 of the California mechanical code says:

1107.1: Refrigeration systems shall be provided with a refrigeration machinery room when any of the following conditions exist:

1107.1.1: The quantity of refrigerant in a single, independent refrigerant circuit of a system exceeds Table 11-1 amounts.

(Table 11-1 amounts are then given in pounds of refrigerant per 1000 sq. ft. of room, with different amounts for each type of refrigerant.)

My question: Is the refrigeration machinery room requirement triggered by the fact that the refrigerant circuit passes through the room, even if the portion passing through the room contains less than the Table 11-1 amount?

Thank you.

RE: Refrigeration Machinery Room Requirement Triggered by Retrofit?

Review a copy of ASHRAE 15.  It list the requirements for mechinery rooms, and the requirements to meet code.
