Hole wizzard and shaft od

Hole wizzard and shaft od

Hole wizzard and shaft od

(OP)
Is there a trick to putting a radial tapped hole in a shaft? Putting a plane tangent to the od does not work, neither does drawing a radial line and creating a plane perpendicular to it. Maybe the hole wizzard will not work on a curved surface.

It would probably work by putting a flat on the shaft, but in the real world you can drill and tap a radial hole in a shaft without doing that.

Even if there is a way to create the hole, I wonder if the cosmetic thread will show. I might have to resort to extruding a hole equal to the minor diameter and then drawing a cosmetic thread.

Thanks for suggestions.

RE: Hole wizzard and shaft od

What version of SW are you using?

In SW2004 (& 03 I believe) if you select the surface first, then click on the Hole Wiard icon. The HW will place a point where you selected the surface. This point will need to be positioned using relations or dimensions. Other points can also be added before closing the HW to create the hole(s).

RE: Hole wizzard and shaft od

You still have to offset a plane outside of the OD then pick the plane first, then select your Hole Wizard.

You can't pick a curved surface and start a Hole wizard, unless you want to use 3Dsketch to control your HW hole. if you want a straight hole into a cylinder then you will require a plane (OUTSIDE) of the OD.

RE: Hole wizzard and shaft od

Actually, you can do it both ways. If the point in the 3D sketch is related coincident to a plane, the holes axis will lay on that plane. I prefer using the 3D sketch as it eliminates the need to create an extra plane. (OK ... so I'm lazy)

Having said that, if you ever wanted to "rotate" the hole, the added plane would be needed.

You also need to use the 3D sketch method if you want the cosmetic thread to be added automatically.  If you use the plane method you will have to add it yourself.

RE: Hole wizzard and shaft od

Scott,

What do you mean you have to give a direction?  I have never done this when using a 3D sketch with Hole Wizard.  Unless you mean if the 3D point is not on a surface.  If that is the case, then a plane does not necessarily set direction either.  I have seen Hole Wizard try to construct the hole sketch in the opposite direction of the material when a plane was selected and not a planer surface.

RE: Hole wizzard and shaft od

If you use a plane to make a HW hole and that plane is on the outside of the part. (I'm talking about a Cylindrical part not   a part with a flat face.) Then when you pick that part it goes in the direction of the Soid body. - If you pick a plane that cuts through the body, SW assumes the direction. You cannot pick Midplane to fix this. That is why a Plane offset to outside the part is needed.

With a 3D sketch HW hole seems to work different then I remember. Last time I remember making a 3D sketch HW hole you needed to provide a direction, unless I'm thinking of something else.

RE: Hole wizzard and shaft od

Scott,

I agree with you that the plane must to tangent to the outside of the part.

For providing a direction when using a 3D sketch, I think you are thinking of something else.  I have been using the 3D skecth method since it came out in SW2003 and except for ocassionally SW not wanting to create the cosmetic thread, I have had no problems that I can remember.
