slab on grade
slab on grade
(OP)
I have a slab on grade I am designing that has (2) tanks that weigh 130,000 lbs each. Any good way to design the slab.
When was the last time you drove down the highway without seeing a commercial truck hauling goods?

RE: slab on grade
Could you please further elaborate your question. Please respond to the following questions:
1. Shape and size of these tanks
2.Foot prints of tanks
3.Are they Steel tanks
4.If they are circular, then do we need to provide the anchor bolts along the periphery of the tanks
5.Do you know the bearing capacity of soil
If we have the above mentioned info, then we can design our slab by conventional or FEM based method. We can also use FEM based software to design our slab.

RE: slab on grade
are there any good books dealing with this specifically or is the design basically like a big footing?
RE: slab on grade
Thanks for your reply to my queries. Now,I want you to go through API 650,which deals with design of steel tank foundation. You need to carry out the following stability checks:
1.Sliding check
2.Overtunrning check
3.Bearing capacity check
4.Settlement check
5.Uplift check
6.Finally the design of your gade slab by any method explained perviuosly
To cary out these checks, you need to determine, what are your basic loads e.g
1.Dead load of tank and acessories etc
2.Live load if any
3.Weight of fluid in your tanks
4.Wind Load
5. seismic load
You also need to determine, which load is governining wind or seismic and then you need to define your load combinations as per ACI 318 to carry out the above mentined checks.
By the way, what is the service in these steel tank and why you want to have grade slab to support your steel tanks? Why do not you go for ring foundation along the periphery of tanks and engineering fill to support the bottom of tank.
