Robot enabling device

Robot enabling device

Robot enabling device

(OP)
We have an 8-motor/3-axis machine which, in essence, is a robot as far as the RIA standards go. The controls for the machine include a teach pendant with 2 jog buttons, a 2-channel e-stop button, and a 3-position enabling device. My question is what makes the circuitry for the 3-position enabling device safe? Say for instance on a Fanuc robot, how is the enabling device interlocked with the controls? When my enabling device is released, am I allowed to disable drives through software? I have been told that the robots are safe due to the fact that they have dual processors and they carry some sort of third party approval.
