Balloons, BOMs, assy configs...

Balloons, BOMs, assy configs...

Balloons, BOMs, assy configs...

(OP)
SW 2005 SP3.1

I have a drawing of an assembly with several configurations and a sheet for each config.  I changed the names of the configurations in the model and in my drawings, the BOM's on each sheet died (only column heading visible).  No problem, I'll just replace the BOM's.  Problem is, I can't get any balloons to correspond to the new BOM's.  Its like the old BOM is still there in spirit.  Anyone else have this problem?  Is there a fix?

If you see your BOM in the tree delete it.

Thanks for the quick reply.

That was one of the last things that I tried.  I deleted anything and everything BOM that I could from the tree.  Didn't seem to change the situation.

Right mouse on white space on your drawing, not within a view. Click Properties and in the Sheet Properties dialog, go to the lower left corner and click the down arrow. Make sure the view is the view of what you want in your BOM.
In your Document Properties make sure your Automatic update of BOM is checked.
Good luck.
If this does not work you will have to call your VAR.

OK, thanks.  After trying that, still same result.  Time to talk to the VAR, I guess.

RE: Balloons, BOMs, assy configs...

If you changed your config names using SW Explorer, it should  have updated the drawing references for you. Especially if you changed them from within the .slddrw file opened in SW Explorer.

Does selecting the BOM Follow assembly order option help?

When I have multiple configs across individual sheets I insert the BOM with the Keep missing items, Strikeout & Follow assembly orderoptions selected, so that the BOM & balloon numbers are consistent from sheet to sheet.

RE: Balloons, BOMs, assy configs...

I have had that same problem also.  Sometimes the BOM has a mind of it's own and deletes everything but the heading row.  Rebuilding doesn't work either.  I usually have to delete the assembly and insert a new view to get the BOM to show correctly.
It happens on rare occasions, but it does happen.  By the way, I am using the SW BOM, not an Excel BOM.

CBL, that may be part or all of my problem.  I didn't change the names thru SW Explorer like I prolly should have.  I opened up the assy and renamed the configs from the tree.

smcadman, I think we are talking about the same thing.  I generally use the isometric view to generate the BOM and keep most or all of my balloons there.  Maybe if I delete and reinsert just that view on each sheet, I may be able to make this work.

Well that seems to fix the problem - delete and reinsert isometric view.  Luckily I am not losing any notes or dims from this view.  Thanks for everyone's input.

For future reference, would I have not had this problem if I used SW Explorer to change the config names?

RE: Balloons, BOMs, assy configs...

If i understand, what you could've done was right clich on the view got to properties. In the dialog box go to the section "Bill of Materials (BOM)" check the "keep linked to BOM" and in the drop down select you new BOM you added (example: Bill of Material1)

sound right?

Sounds right.  At least I thought so when I tried it.  Same result.  I am thinking the problem may not have a logical fix and may be bug oriented.  I dunno.

RE: Balloons, BOMs, assy configs...

It should  work using SW Explorer, but the simplest & best way to find out is to experiment & test for yourself.
