Semi-Integral Bridge Construction

Semi-Integral Bridge Construction

Semi-Integral Bridge Construction

(OP)
Has anyone seen any design examples or studies in the design of semi-integral abutments?

I've seen plenty from Tennessee on integral abutments but have yet to really find any on semi-integral.

RE: Semi-Integral Bridge Construction

A few years ago I designed four "semi-integral" bridges. IMHO, semi-integral is subjective. For these four bridges, they were simply jointless; the deck was cast integrally with the backwall (or end block). The backwall was not connected to the abutment stem. The abutments were designed in the traditional manner. On this project the bridges were constructed in a fill area ~ 30 feet. The client didn't want them designed as true integral structures.

The bridge I'm working on is a butted P/S beam bridge and has no deck.  I was intending on analyzing it as a pinned-head integral abutment by inserting a pin through the box beam into the pile cap.  Is this the same as semi-integral?

Google "integral abutment".  You might like the "Appendix c Integral Abutment" site.
