Server Room Cooling Requirements

Server Room Cooling Requirements

Server Room Cooling Requirements

(OP)
How do I compute the heat generated from the computer equipment in a small server room and what is needed to cool that room to an acceptable temperature?

This is the scenario:
 An office space converted server room (7' x 9'10" x 9'1")
 2 LCD Monitors
 1 CRT Monitor
 3 PC's
 3 Tower Servers
1 Cabinet with Top Mounted Fan that houses the following:
    4 Rack Servers
    3 Switches
1 APC Network Air 1000 that produces 7200 BTU/h cooling capacity with the exaust vented into the ceiling

The room has two HVAC registers that keep other regular office space at about 80F.  With the portable AC unit running, the server room temperature fluctuates around the 85F mark.

Any cojnstructive help is greatly appreciated!!

RE: Server Room Cooling Requirements

Here is a general approach to this situation. You can look for the Power dissipation of each equipment (WATTs) in the server room.

BTU/hr = 3.413 x WATTs

Tons of cooling = 12,000/(BTU/hr)

For instance, if all the equipment adds up to 5,000 WATTS...then you get 17,065 BTU/hr and that equates to 1.42 Tons of cooling. I would add extra cooling margin in case of future addtions to the server equipment. I would size the equipment to the next size up...if Carrier has a 1.5 ton unit and a 2 ton unit....I would select the 2 ton unit.

Hope that shed some light on the subject for you.

BTW, where are you located to allow your Server Room to operate at 85F?

RE: Server Room Cooling Requirements

Well, there are a few more things that needs to be added to arrive at the total load.

1.  Internal loads like people, lighting, etc., other than the equipment load that's mentioned earlier.

2.  External loads like heat through walls, roof, windows, etc.

3.  Heat gain through outside air.

RE: Server Room Cooling Requirements

If the servers run 24/7 - I would check that your air conditioning actually operates over weekend, public holidays, etc.
