Auto. engine >> vertical shaft power output
(OP)
Anybody know of a bolt on device to get a vertical shaft output from a 100+ HP auto. engine? No transmission.
Current options:
1. A RWD car with IRS. Turn IRS 90 degrees and block one IRS output shaft from turning.
Problem: Transmission weight and "crude" design.
2. Shaft drive motorcycle - turn the rear wheel axel shaft 90 degrees to give a vertical shaft power output.

RE: Auto. engine >> vertical shaft power output
Are you rotating the engine? You will probably need a dry sump system and fuel injection.
RE: Auto. engine >> vertical shaft power output
No rotation of engine - stationary.

Rotating ( your definition :<) )would be an acceptable option but I have seen nothing on it anywhere.
I would be very interested in any information you can provide.
Thanks.
RE: Auto. engine >> vertical shaft power output
If it is down, how about a 100Hp engine from an outboard motor ?
RE: Auto. engine >> vertical shaft power output
Up or down shaft and rpm doesn't make any difference as I want to split the power into additional pullies/belts/chain drives downstream.
Re: Outboard motor
I recall someone experimenting with this idea several years ago but do not know if it was successful - probably not as I have heard nothing further....?
Someone once suggested that it would be easier to take the outboards power off the top flywheel . . . but I have heard nothing more about this either.
What I would like is to find a developed/commercial option.
PS. I think it is strange that will all the thousands of different types of machines available in the marketplace that there is nothing readily available that will give 30-150 hp in a vertical shaft.
RE: Auto. engine >> vertical shaft power output
If a gearbox is needed anyway, might as well stay with a horizontal crank and turn the drive through 90 degrees.
How about a transaxle gearbox, with the bellhousing rotated ninety degrees ?

This site (in OZ) has direct flywheel/crankshaft power adapters to give male output shafts. The power can then be put into a right angle drive.

Perhaps you could find a boat drive for sale that has had the lower unit damaged. You can bolt something in place of the customary gear box and skeg.
