How far do you commute?

How far do you commute?

(OP)

Just picking up on McCormick93 post (thread731-125070) on his two job offers he remarked that his commute was three miles to one of his job offers.
I was just wondering what distances other member’s commute every day to work and how do you find it?

RE: How far do you commute?

Roadbridge.

Pure hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: How far do you commute?

RE: How far do you commute?

80 miles, 80-90 minutes, each way.

It's a bit much for me but I work 25% from home so that makes it tolerable. I'm hoping to move to 50%.

It's tolerable because traffic's not too bad, generally. When traffic's a mess, I hate it.

RE: How far do you commute?

2.5 miles. I don't walk it as often as I should, but at least once a week I ride my bike or walk.

The worst commute I've ever had was 10 miles in 40 minutes, the best was 15 minutes by ferry.

My favorite commute was 25 miles, 45 minutes, half of it through New England woods.  I missed it when I moved closer.

RE: How far do you commute?

If you ae in a high stress position, a medium-long commute can be a Godsend.

I had the Director of Engineering job from Hell.  Tons of stress, but a 45-50 mile commute each way every day.  Traffic was never a problem and the drive through the rolling hills and farmland of Eastern Nebraska gave me time to deal wit hteh frustrations o the day on teh way home so I walked in the door ready to be Husband and Daddy.  The same 50-60 minute commute in the morning allowed me to mentally steel myself for the day ahead and set the priorities for the day's work, there  by lessening the stress.

Presently, I have a 15-mile commute to a lower stress job in a city which holds the dubious distinction as the largest city without any crosstown freeway.  When the snowbirds fly to the Old Pueblo from the great white North, and the students return to classes at the University, the traffic in and of itself can be a major stress maker...if you let it.

I recently mounted a set of 5-chime air horns from an old Santa-Fe passenger locomotive on my pick-up.  In a traffic jam near the rail line, it can be a real hoot to sound for a grade crossing .  Next project is a Heads Up display with a gunsight

RE: How far do you commute?

In recent years:

Outer London, eight miles, 40 minutes. 20 minutes off-road on the pushbike.

Tyneside to Teesside, 110 miles round trip, 75 mins in morning, 45 mins in late evening. Oops, that last bit means I was speeding. 50 minutes.

Having moved house, 18 miles each way, 30 minutes morning, 20 minutes evening.

RE: How far do you commute?

25 miles, all on the tollway so it takes about 30 minutes.

RE: How far do you commute?

37 miles ea way. From one side of O.C., CA to the other.

RE: How far do you commute?

22 miles each way about 30-35 minutes.

Mostly through nice country side, really nice when the nights are light, less so in winter.

It is also going against the flow of traffic, for some sad reason it is nice to see others stuck in traffic when you are moving freely, you could easily double the times if driving the other way, morning and evening.

Does anyone else feel the same about traffic going the other way or the guy next to you in a jam being in a Ferrari, a sad sense of smugness?

RE: How far do you commute?

6 miles, about 8-10 Min. Believe it or not, thats about as far as I have ever commuted.........and hopefully ever will have to!

RE: How far do you commute?

Current company (DC area):  26 miles,  30-40 minutes;  a fairly "intense" commute.

Before recent office relocation (still DC area):  ~30 miles,  35-45 minutes*** - and even more "inyense" (***major tieups once weekly, add 20 minutes to afternoon commute)

Brfore that (in Mississippi):  20 miles, 20-45 minutes, not that intense (but not "relaxing" either).

WHen teaching about 15 years ago:  ~25 miles, 30-40 minutes, but not intense at all.

RE: How far do you commute?

RE: How far do you commute?

Best commute ... current job ... 9km in 8 minutes through farmland back roads.

Worst temporary commute (twice a week) ... St. Catharines (Niagara) to Concord (just North of Totonto) ... approx 100km ... 1-1/2 hours on a good day.

Worst permanent commute ... Barrie to Concord  ... 75km > usually 1 hour, but in bad winter weather, 2 hours. In reeeaaally bad weather ... stay at work! I quit that job when the drive become the highlight of the day.

Approximately 1 mile. 9 minute bike ride including a stop at Tim Hortons on the way.

That is a rarity, I know. I consider myself very lucky.

RE: How far do you commute?

4 km or a 15 min mountain bike ride. Downhill to work, uphill home. More time with the family, good exercise, a breath of fresh air... This is happiness in one of its purest forms.

RE: How far do you commute?

I commute at 100 km/h for about 1/2hr.... just other fellow workers... no stress... nice straight roads.  Falling asleep is about the only concern.

RE: How far do you commute?

For 2.5 years I commuted 25 mi each way (2 hrs each way). Then for 7 years I commuted 50 mi each way (1.5 hrs each way). Then for 7 years I commuted 6 mi each way (12 min each way). Now I commute 13 mi each way (22 min each way). I consider the shorter commutes a godsend.

RE: How far do you commute?

9 minutes - 4 miles - moderate traffic -

RE: How far do you commute?

45 miles each way on freeway; 40 to 70 min, depending on whether the state police is on patrol or not; commuted this way for 15 years.  Downside, face east going and west returning, meaning always facing the sun.  Fun part, watching other commuters eat breakfast, apply make-up, complete dressing, and occasionally brush their teeth!

RE: How far do you commute?

The suckers queued up on the other side of the road definitely makes me feel better about my commute (10 miles convinced it takes 15 min but nearly always 20!). There are some mornings when it sends me into blind panic when I think I might have forgotten something though - it would take at least an hour to get back if I forgot something I needed before lunch.

RE: How far do you commute?

Now I have a roughly 5 mile commute and it takes about 10 minutes, and that is in traffic.

I gave up a 12 mile commute that took easily 45 minutes or more each way.  I hated the stress of driving in that much traffic.

RE: How far do you commute?

Home to work, each way:
1st job - about 10 miles
2nd job - about 12 miles
3rd job - about 42 miles
4th job - about 22 miles
now.......6 miles door to door, 2 traffic lights and a prime parking spot.

Less than 20 mile round trip.  Takes less than 15 minutes in the morning going to work, sometimes 30 minutes in the evening coming home from work.

RE: How far do you commute?

35 miles; 45 minutes one way.  Best time 38 minutes (fortunately there aren't many speedtraps, knock wood, as my speedo rarely works).
Going the opposite direction of most traffic on I-10 does give a feeling of smug satisfaction.  I don't come across any bad traffic until about 5 miles from home - interchange construction from hell.

RE: How far do you commute?

I like living in cities. It takes 20 minutes to get to my job in the suburbs, while traffic coming into the city is backed up for miles. The expressway is the only practical route to my current job, but when I worked in the city I never had to use it and the commute was much easier.

RE: How far do you commute?

used to be 55 miles each way.  Now it is about 30 secs to my home office.  Much better this way!

RE: How far do you commute?

15 miles, 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.  I don't leave the office between 4:30 and at least 6:00 in the evening.  I had a job that was less than a mile away for about a year, and I was constantly late.  I prefer the 20 to 30 minute commute if traffic's not bad.  It provides a separation between work life and home life.

RE: How far do you commute?

8 miles 15 minutes one way catching all green lights but if I want to do the freeway thing it's 12 miles and 30 minutes...go figure.  I ride my bike once or twice a week.

Do you trust your intuition or go with the flow?

RE: How far do you commute?

About 14 miles, 20 minutes including getting to and from the highway. Good thing is it is against the crawl on the other side. As kchafie mentioned about forgetting something,it would take me more than an hour to get back home. I moved my wife's car once and took off with the keys so after that I always made sure I used the spare set.
Unfortunately, the public transport infrastructure leaves some thing to be desired otherwise I would consider using it. A bus, train and another bus to cover 14 miles and depending on schedules, maybe at least an hour and a half, maybe two. No thanks.

RE: How far do you commute?

About 2 miles by road or bike trail. Traffic? No.

My last commute was 70 miles, about an hour and 10 minutes depending on weather. The mountain drive was nice most days.

Needless to say, I chose my new residence location to reduce my commute once I got the current job.

RE: How far do you commute?

12 miles, los angeles, california.  Ranging from 20 minutes to 1 hour one way (typically 30 or so minutes...)  So unpredictable here.

RE: How far do you commute?

~28mi each way, about 40min on a good day, up to an hour on a really bad day.

I also am going the "wrong" direction I live close to downtown Detroit and work in the suburbs, Id hate to see the times if I lived in the suburbs and worked downtown....

RE: How far do you commute?

NickE-

How do you like downtown Detroit? Everyone says Detroit is so bad but I don't believe it.

RE: How far do you commute?

I used to commute 600 miles each way every 2 weeks many years ago.  After that 80 miles each way daily.   Now it is about 15 foot steps to my home office every working morning.

RE: How far do you commute?

CRG, looks like you get "Most Improved Commute" so far.

RE: How far do you commute?

EngJW:  Don't believe everything you hear about Detroit.  Detroit is OK, has problems not too much different from most large cities.

Unlike NickE, I live in the west suburbs of Detroit and work downtown.  The commute is usually not bad, except now when construction on the Ford and Jeffries freeways make commuting a pain in the neck.

RE: How far do you commute?

45 miles each way, 1 hour there, 1 hour 15 mins back 90% on straight rods (motorway). Worst run was 2 hours back after a mixture of an accident on the motorway and christmas traffic. Been doing it for more than 3 years and, frankly, it's wearing me down. Previously 3 miles, 15 minutes each way - would do anything to reduce to this now.

RE: How far do you commute?

I used to drive I-10 into Mobile, across the bay bridge (speedway)which is several miles long. I saw everything from women putting on makeup to people reading the newspaper. One time a car passed me and was changing lanes erraticaly. A girl was sitting on the drivers lap, with her head out the window and holding onto the roof while bouncing up and down. Honest. I wouldn't blame anyone for not believing it.

RE: How far do you commute?

Was that some kind of road rage?

RE: How far do you commute?

I communte 2-1/2 blocks, but usually drive it.

That way I can leave 5 minutes to 8am, stop off and get coffee, have my car parked in the garage, and walk through the door at precisely 8 am.

Eng JW:  I believe you.  I routinely have to drive to inspections along the I-80 corridor, averaging about 230 miles per trip.  Eventually you see it all.

Worst thing I saw was a deer get hit by a truck.

RE: How far do you commute?

The worst thing I saw during my commute was an accident resulting in the death of a person.  Large animal road kills, typically moose, are common place during the winter season on the 80 mile route I used to take; however, the meat is not wasted.  Local law enforcement contact people on a list that will come out and harvest the road kill.

RE: How far do you commute?

35 miles, anywhere from 25 minutes to 1.5 hr.  Very inconsistent DC and Baltimore beltway traffic.)  I try to speed when I can, and luckily I've only been pulled over once (for going 70 mph in a 55 zone, of all things!).

I also have to travel about once every one to two weeks about 90 miles roundtrip.  I'm starting to feel more "at home" in my car, since I've been spending so much time in it.  I think I'll forget about upgrading my home and just get a mustang convertible... then I can be the "smug" one on the road!

RE: How far do you commute?

Zo40,

Talking about living in your car, when I used to do the long Newcastle-London run, I would leave civilisation in the late evening, maybe 2100hrs or so, and drive through the night to avoid the nightmare that is London traffic. The M25 is the orbital motorway around London and is an experience best avoided, but at 0300hrs it is bearable. I used to sleep in the back of the estate car - station wagon to the American readers - on an airbed and get a shower at work about 0730. It got to be a running joke with Security.

I've also slept in the car quite a few times when I was with my first employer. Their policy for workers out on site was to give us a fairly small sum of money to find a meal and a B&B for the night. Being young and reckless, we took that to mean 'eat at Burger King, guzzle as much alcohol as possible before the bar closed, and sleep in the car'. That lifestyle would kill me now I am older!

----------------------------------

If we learn from our mistakes,
I'm getting a great education!

RE: How far do you commute?

Worst commute which I did for a year was from just outside Basingstoke UK to Canary Wharf London, 3 hours each way, if the trains and underground was with me, it took me 6 hours a couple of times!
Best commute was 10 mins on the bike.

RE: How far do you commute?

I have several friends (not in Engineering) who commute from Tucson to Phoenix and back every day.  From the North edge of the Tucson Metro area ( Marana) to the South edge of the Phoenix metro (Chandler)is about 95 miles.

Pardon me, but that is totally nuts.

RE: How far do you commute?

I commute 45 miles each way, but it is mostly open interstate.  Normal drive time is 50 min. each way. It's a beautiful drive that takes I-40 East to an elevation of nearly 3000 ft above sea level, where it crosses the Eastern Continental Divide near Ridgecrest, NC.  The scenery along with the absence of heavy traffic make it very nice.

RE: How far do you commute?

I LOVE Detroit. Last year for around 8mths I lived right in the heart of D-town. It was great, a 15min drive to work, lots of culture, tons of fun. I only moved to the 1st ring suburb I'm in now cause of my ex-housemate. The lovely women I live with now are phenomenal. (and the rent is no more expensive, and that's important right now.)

To any eng-tips users, if you are going to be in Detroit feel free to post in the Pub and let me know if you wnat some info on cool things that happen in the city. As I spend 90% of the time I'm not in the office downtown, I can almost always find something interesting.

RE: How far do you commute?

The nicest (in good weather) and strangest commute was a 105-mile (on the road) 70-mile (in the air) commute I had for one Summer.  When the weather was good, I hand propped the old J-3 and flew to the site, landed on the property in rural Nebraska, taxied up to the building and tied down.  It took about an hour and fifteen minutes.

When the weather threatened (Piper Cubs aren't Instrument rated), I drove (About 2:15 if traffic cooperated).  Unfortunately, I drove more often than I flew.  The flight was fanastic, keeping at 1,525 Meters (5,000-Ft.) and basically enjoying the scenery far below all of the commercial and military flights in a bright yellow airplane with the little Continental buzzzing out in front.

Had kids, sold plane...typical story.

RE: How far do you commute?

Current commute  5 mile, 7 to 10 minutes depending on the parking lot and the stop light.

Worst was a summer job, 2.0 hour from western Ohio to East side of Indy.  Summer between high school and college.  Let's see, why did I get out of construction and into chemical plants????

RE: How far do you commute?

What do you pay for parking at work?  I'm in downtown Los Angeles.  Previous company it was $135/month (parking for the office building) and now it is $80/month (5 minute walk from the office).  In both cases, the company offered a Pre-Tax Parking Reimbursement plan.  Paying parking appears to be a phenomenon only occurring in metropolitan areas...

RE: How far do you commute?

Parking in the financial district in San Francisco is about $250/month.  Some employers will pay, but most don't.

Here in Marin county, the only parking garages where you are allowed to park more than 4 hours will run about $60/month.

I imagine your rate of $135/month is about what you would expect to pay in the East Bay (Oakland, Walnut Creek, Concord).

In Berkeley, I think they just take your car away from you, unless you have a peace symbol and run on biodiesel.

My best commute was about 30 miles along A1A between St Augustine and Jacksonville, FL.  Commute time was about 45 minutes, but that was ok, as the drive was very relaxing.

RE: How far do you commute?

My home-to-office commute is 45 miles or 50 minutes.  I rarely go straight to the office in the morning.  If at all possible I go directly to a job.  Some jobs are minutes away and some jobs are at most 1.5 hours away.  Being a technician with a company truck (all expenses company paid) I don’t mind the drive times which are billable anyhow.

RE: How far do you commute?

Approx 3/4 mile each way.  Not even enough to defrost the windows in the winter.

RE: How far do you commute?

some people really have it made commute-wise :)  I am probably average with 20 miles each way and about 35-mins each way.  Anything consistently over an hour calls for flexible start times to avoid peak traffic periods -- two hours of your life are eaten right out of your day and any more is a frigging donation of your time to your employer.  Traffic sure sucks

RE: How far do you commute?

Personally I am glad I live some distance away from work. A steel works, a large chemical complex, several shipyards and two power stations make for a lousy neighbourhood.

It's not too bad of a drive, as long as I stagger my day and miss the rush hours. I usuallt work 7:30-4:30.
It takes about 30 minutes usually. If I sleep in and work from 8-5, it takes 45 minutes each way.

RE: How far do you commute?

Commmuting in my career thus far:

1st job:  23 miles, 25 minutes, mostly interstate but some rural highway.
2nd job:  18 miles, 20 minutes, almost an even split between interstate and rural highway.
3rd job:  9 miles, 12 minutes (8 if I try hard - grin!), 90%+ rural highway.

Why did I mention all three jobs?  Because I was able to change jobs three times and never move from my current home!  Woohoo!  Sometimes, you get lucky.

2 miles, with a stop at 0.5 miles to drop my daughter off at school.  We walk the first bit and I cycle the second.

RE: How far do you commute?

My worst was while working in southern Chicago and commuting from Milwaukee, WI. Mornings weren't too bad. I'd leave around 04:30 and arrive arround 06:00. Afternoons, huh - yeah right. I'd leave the facility in Cicero at 16:00, sit on the Kennedy for over an hour, wait for another hour in the loop, and then finally arrive home around 19:00...

The best - contract job for 8 months that was 3 miles door to door.

Current - 50 miles door to door. Light traffic, all freeway. It takes me 45 minutes flat both ways.

RE: How far do you commute?

About 6 minutes! that includes checking the mailbox, buying a paper, and walking to work ..A considerable decrease from the 100 K commute each way to work I used to make.....

RE: How far do you commute?

About one minute.  Thirty feet from the back door of my residence to the front door of my office (here in the boon-docks)  Sometimes stop to look at the deer.  No office phone in my house.  No home phone in my office.

RE: How far do you commute?

Each project I take on first entails driving to the airport and getting on a plane.  I would estimate last years total "commute" distance as 80,000 to 100,000 miles, anybody beat this????

RE: How far do you commute?

Work at home, commute about 25 steps takes less than a minute.

better than 80,000 miles any day.

When on a project site always look for accommodations near work. Longest project commute was about 5 miles on an almost always empty highway to live in a resort by a lake where I could go diving 100 ft from my apartment. (Would put the gar on at home and walk to the dock and jump in.)
