Hello, please HELP!

I am a structural engineer with 12 years cumulative experience for High rise building design using reinforced concrete. I work on and off so I tend to forget my design skills. I started working again last week, and my boss gave me a project to check and I have noticed that the submission date was close. Worst, the material they used for the project was steel. This should be easy since the design I am going to check is a small house covering the relay houses. Problem is, I have never designed a steel structure in my career. Please advice what kind of references is suitable in my situation.

Here's the situation:

They bolted an angle bar all around the area to be covered on the floor for the columns to connect thru welding, they used steel tube for the column. Then they supplied lateral braces between columns made of steel tube also. The roof is a simple pitched roof with no cross bracings, just a bottom member of the same with the top member which is also a steel tube.

I would like to check the embedment length of bolt they used for the angle in the existing slab, the size of columns, size of roof truss member, the channel where the door jamb should be connected, the thickness and size of plate necessary to connect vertical members to the angle on the floor, the number of bolts needed, etc.

I browsed your site and look for any questions that maybe same as mine but have not found one so far. I have noticed lots of references suggested by other members to those who are newbies to steel design but I dont know which one is best. I guess I really need to grab AISC ASD, isn't it?

CAn you also please advise what formula should I use to calculate the embedment length of bolts on rocks?

Please help.

Hire someone who knows what they're doing.  Part of being a licensed professional engineer is being responsible enough to know when you're out of your element.  If you know less about steel design and analysis than yer average EIT, you have no more business than they would to do that work without PE supervision.

You should find out what building code governs your project area and look in its referenced stanrdards section.  You will see what codes you will need to obtain and study.  Most codes reference for instance the ACI 318-02, the AISC ASD 9th and the LRFD 3rd, the NDS 2001, AISI 2001, ASCE 7-98 and 7-02 and so on.  Some of these codes have new editions out that have not been referenced yet, such as the 318-05, 530-05 and the soon to be AISC 4th which will be a combined spec for both ASD and LRFD.  I suggest you buy some of these codes and study them for a few hours each night or as you need to and pick it back up.  There are more than I mentioned as you probably know.
