309 GTAW stainless to carbon

I have recently certfied on S70 GTAW/SMAW carbon pipe. I have been practicing for the 309 tig wire on carbon steel I sometimes get a nice root on the inside but there are times I get sugar I have tried different settings on the purge on the torch with straight argon. I ussally set the torch on 15cfm and the purge on 10cfm the welding machine at 85 amps with a 1/8 wire I can really use some help

RE: 309 GTAW stainless to carbon

!5cf is fairly low as is the 85 amps-I usually ran 35-40cfm and I'd bump the current up in the 100-120 range.  Its been a long time since I've had to certify but this would be my starting point.  Maytag

Thanks for the info I do seem to lay in a nicer root at a higher amp. As for purging the inside of the pipe as as I weld should it be the same as the torch? I do have a spacer and tape up the joint as I weld it up

RE: 309 GTAW stainless to carbon

I think your purge is about right. Good luck,Maytag
