Boost Transformer and Line Reactor

Boost Transformer and Line Reactor

(OP)
Hello,

Along with modifying the voltage does a boost transformer in effect accomplish the same task as a line reactor?

Servo

RE: Boost Transformer and Line Reactor

In terms of reducing harmonics, generally yes - for the same amount of impedance.

RE: Boost Transformer and Line Reactor

A boost transformer generally will not perform as well as a series reactor. The idea of a boost transformer is that for small changes of voltage an autotransformer costs less and has less in the way of losses and voltage drop.

RE: Boost Transformer and Line Reactor

I agree with mc5w that if this "boost" transformer is an autotransformer it will probably have very low impedance - and might not work as well as a line reactor for reducing harmonics.  That's why I qualified my answer.

You'd be better off with a standard two-winding transformer if you need to change voltage as well as provide a buffering impedance.
