Adding In-Context Features To Base Parts?

Adding In-Context Features To Base Parts?

Adding In-Context Features To Base Parts?

(OP)
Probably a silly question, but:

When editing a part in-context of an assembly the features you add don't get added to the base part.  Generally this is a good thing.  But, sometimes I want the new features as part of the base part.

Is there a way to easily add these features to the base part.  Make the 2 the same?

RE: Adding In-Context Features To Base Parts?

Features get added to whichever part is the active part.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "base part".  Do you mean the first component in the assembly tree?

I could be the world's greatest underachiever, if I could just learn to apply myself.

RE: Adding In-Context Features To Base Parts?

I think he means a part inserted into another part. Like a cast part inserted into another part to be machined. Then the machined part is in the assembly.

The only way I could see doing this is to insert the base into the assembly and mate it in the exact same position. Then edit it from there. Maybe make the Machined part transperent to see it.

In the assy, edit the part and add the new features.

Thanks ctopher.

Like I said silly question.  Just got to remember to select edit part before adding features I want added to the base part.  And not selecting edit part for features I only want in a particular assembly, but not as part of the base part.  That answers 1 part of the question.

But, let's say I create a bunch of holes in a case then later that configuration becomes a 'standard part'.  Can I later do a save as as case file II and somehow add those features from the assembly into case file II, w/o redrawing them?  I've done this by saving the entire assembly w/ new name then deleting everything else but the case and the features.  Is there a better way?

PS  by base part I just mean the original unmodified part model that I inserted into the assembly.

RE: Adding In-Context Features To Base Parts?

If I understand you correctly, try selecting everything you want as a single part, then save as a subassy. Open the subassy, then save as a part.
Maybe post a image of what you are trying to accomplish?
