Sealing truss drawings

Sealing truss drawings

I was wondering if anyone of know of any other state other than Illinois that require you to be registered as a Structural Engineer for you to be able to sign structural drawings.

RE: Sealing truss drawings

California also as a SE as well. I heared there are other state boards in currently discussion to implemet a SE Stamp as well.

RE: Sealing truss drawings

Actually, CA requires a SE only for certain kinds of structures.  For the others that require a stamp, a PE is sufficient.

RE: Sealing truss drawings

The State of Oregon and the State of Washington also have S.E. stamps in addition to California and Illiois. Each state and cities within each state determine the limits at which a P.E. ia allowed to seal drawings.

Thanks for all your responses. My specific question is only for sealing Truss drawings. Can I as a Mech PE sign Truss drawings in most states? Anyone know anything about this!!!

RE: Sealing truss drawings

Generically speaking, Mechanical PE's can't seal truss drawings. Only Civil PE and SE's can do so.

Well, I have been designing trusses for about 5 or more years now and I haven't seen any particular regulation prohibiting me from sealing Truss drawings. Truss design is 2D mechanics and yes my major concentration has been mechanics. Most states don't have restrictions except a few. I am wondering if anyone knows in particular any state other than IL that requires a SE to seal Truss drawings.

RE: Sealing truss drawings

The day you trust a structural engineer to design the braking system in your car is the day I'll trust a mechanical engineer to design the trusses that sit over my head.  If it weren't for the software that spits out the design for you, I'd guess you haven't a clue of how to design the truss by hand calculations.

RE: Sealing truss drawings

Hawaii requires structural license for truss calculations.

RE: Sealing truss drawings

prblmfxr what a troll post!!!!!

All a degree indicates, is you are smart enough to pass school.  Real learning is experience.  We have all seen incompetent CE, SE, ME, PE's.  (I have build structures where found many SE's  errors and un-buildable designs.)

Trussdudes five years experience should speak for its self.

RE: Sealing truss drawings

Since statics and strength of materials, vibrations, fracture mechanics, theory of elasticity, plate and shell structures, and more were all taught by the ME department at my school, I would consider a mechanical enigneer to be more than qualified as a structural. In fact, I'd rather be aligned with the mechanicals than the civils. Because I passed the civil PE doesn't mean I want anything at all to do with water treatment or landfills or transportation.   Timber connection design has as much to do with alkalinity determinations or hydrographs as does gear design.

RE: Sealing truss drawings

Based on my experience, I would be happy just to see a PE actually looking at the truss engineering.  I realize this may sound negative, but I have seen way too many truss signatures/seals that are machine generated or otherwise stamped by the high school technician.
