Crazy Cosmetic Threads

Crazy Cosmetic Threads

Crazy Cosmetic Threads

(OP)
I am using SWX 2005 SP02 and have been having two cosmetic thread problems.

Frequently I will be working in an assembly and out of no where huge, dashed line circles appear.  When I hover over them, the flag says HoleThreadXX.  I have to go into the detail that has that thread, Edit Feature on that tap, hit Ok, then the cosmetic thread goes back to the correct size.  I am working in a metric drawing using metric taps.

For the other cosmetic thread problem I am having, I have yet to find a fix.  I have a large base part with many tapped holes in the top.  I am getting "shadows" of the cosmetic threads.  For example, if I have two taps 100mm apart, I will not only get the cosmetic threads on those two holes, but I will get another pair of cosmetic threads (not holes) a small distance away.  I cannot select them or do anything with them.  These are existing taps that I am having problems with, when I put in new taps, they do not have shadows.  I opened the base on two other systems, both with different video cards, and the same problem is there. Does anyone know why this is happening?

RE: Crazy Cosmetic Threads

I don't know why that is happening, but your first step should probably be to install SP3 to see if that cures the problem.

Thanks, I will try that, but the other two systems I tried opening it on were both running SP3.

RE: Crazy Cosmetic Threads

Are all the video cards & drivers, SW certified?

RE: Crazy Cosmetic Threads

This is interesting to me also, I have had the very large taps show up also.  I have been doing the same thing that you are doing.
Nvidia Quadaro FX 3000 with driver off of SW.

RE: Crazy Cosmetic Threads

Is it just the Metric tapped holes that are giving you grief?
Can you measure approximately whether the large cosmetic diameters are 25.4 or 2.54 larger than they should be?

RE: Crazy Cosmetic Threads

I have had the same problem. The holes are 1/4-20. I am using SP 3.0. I loaded SW into a different computer and the "halo" still shows up. Im getting tired of the little things like this in SW.

RE: Crazy Cosmetic Threads

The first thing you listed above is a known bug and SW is working on the Large Cosmetic threads appearing. To get around it you must select "No Cosmetic thread" in the Hole wizard and the problem goes away.

2nd issue - I agree with CBL - Are the video card certified along with the drivers you are using?

The video cards we have are the Nvidia Quadro FX 1000, which is certified with Solidworks.  I will download the driver from the Solidworks site and see what happens.  Thanks for the suggestion.

As for the large cosmetic thread, I have never measured it to see if it is 25.4 the correct size, but next time it happens I will do that.

I loaded the new driver and the cosmetic thread shadows are still there.

RE: Crazy Cosmetic Threads

I figured out what in my part is making the cosmetic thread shadows.  I had drawn a rib-like item on one side of my base and instead of drawing it again, I mirrored it.  I used the mirror command and selected a plane to mirror about and then selected my rib as the body to mirror.  It is after that command that my shadowed cosmetic threads appear.  I looked and the only thing I selected was the rib so I don't under stand why my cosmetic threads would mirror also.  The cosmetic threads are definitely mirrored about that same plane.  Any ideas as to why this is happening with the mirror command?

RE: Crazy Cosmetic Threads

I submitted this ghosting thread problem to my VAR.  They passed it on to Solidworks; SPR 194177 is presently open concerning ghosting threads with a mirror feature.

I like version 2005 but it seems like there are alot more weird quirks and strange happenings than any previous version to date.
