Forgings in ASTM A105 normalised at -20¦F (-29¦C)

Forgings in ASTM A105 normalised at -20¦F (-29¦C)

Forgings in ASTM A105 normalised at -20¦F (-29¦C)

Some studies have demonstrated that about 40% of Main Flanges in ASTM A105, despite the certificates, have not been treated properly after forging and that the transition temperature, with a mean impact toughness, of 27J is about + 20°C.
The question is how is possible that ANSI/ASME B16.34 authorized to employ this forging at - 29°C taking also in account the aggravating point that the mechanical properties can be verified with specimen obtained from separated forged test blanks (as per ASTM A105)?

RE: Forgings in ASTM A105 normalised at -20¦F (-29¦C)

The ASTM certification is based on an honors system in the US with suppliers - there are no ASTM police to assure control of heat treatment and other ASTM requirements, unless the customer actually witnesses product fabrication.

Until there has been an unusual number of product failures related to a supplier that abuses ASTM certification, nothing will change. Buyer beware has always been the case for purchasing components.

Sounds like we need an ASTM jail in order to send a few of the dishonorables to for a short stay.
