new releases...how long do you wait?

new releases...how long do you wait?

new releases...how long do you wait?

So as I understand it, SW '06 quickly approaches. You guys gonna upgrade right away or will you wait a little while for others to be the guinea pigs?

Just curious...

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

I usually wait for the first SP to be released. So when 2006 SP/1.0 is out then we will upgrade everyone.

Best Regards,
Jon

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

Depends what sort of utility will be available out of the new release.  Waiting for the first SP is wise, but sometimes what you use out of the new features will not cause significant instability if switching early.  Checking with the forum to see everyone else's experience can give some good insight before switching.

MMike,

You should load the nre release on a standalone machine and test, test, test, and test again using your data.  Or you can wait until the Service Packs are released.....I enjoy doing development testing but I'm not paid to test software.  So we usually wait.

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

I usually wait for the 1st SP at least.  When are they saying '06 will be released?

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

We wait until the first service pack is released before upgrading, but even then it can stll be unstable.

Also, back up everything before using the new release, just in case you need to revert to it.  (Can't go back.)

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

Waiting for a service pack doesn't mean the software is stable....sometimes the service pack introduces new problems.  If you can do testing before releasing to production usage that's great, but if not back up your data.  Our data is backed up but that's a lot of data so we track the problems other users are having and then make a decision to upgrade or wait.

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

You should test all releases whether they are SP's or not. That is the only true test to determine if the upgrade is for you or not.

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

I join the beta program so I can test and find issues that will effect me before the software is even released.  I of course report the issues I find and hope they are resolved in the released version of the software (SP0.0).  When the production version of the software is released I know the areas to check (from beta testing)that may effect me.  If the issues are resolved I immediately install the new release for production.  If the issues are not resolved I wait until the next SP.  Once the SP is released I test and decide from there.  Unlike most people here I prefer to install the newest version of the software as soon as possible.  I don't have a hard rule about waiting until a certain SP.

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

I always test the new release on my pc for about 2 weeks. If OK, then I update the server's Admin Image. Never had problem with 1st release and 1st SP usually comes out fairly soon after.

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

Unfortunately I don't really have the luxury of doing any testing. We're two engineers in the place. It's essentially non-stop. I don't really have the resources to "ease it in" to use.

I will likley wait until SP1...when the time comes.

Good info. Thanks

RE: new releases...how long do you wait?

My company waited until SP1.1 to upgrade, which was probably about right for us under the circumstances.  However, it is crucial to read the FAQ about properly uninstalling the old SW version and installing the new SW version.  The biggest cause of problems in SW2005 at my workplace has been users whose computers didn't have their SolidWorks registry entries cleaned out during the uninstallation of SW2004.
