I'm trying to make some practical sense out of the 1994 article by Michael Duncan on estimating lateral pile movement by the CLM (characteristic load method).  I believe it appeared in the Journal of Geotechnical Engrg between 1994 and 1996.

Since all of the equations are nondimensional ratios and no soil pressures are inputted anywhere (only data charts and coefficients based on sand or clay), how can this method account for different blow counts and/or varying materials at different layers within an augered hole? Or, perhaps one uses another method (such as Caisson or L-Pile) to calculate the hole width and burial depth and then uses the CLM to estimated groundline movement?

Has anyone on this forum worked out a spreadsheet that you would share with me that does the calculations that the article presents?  An example of its layout is given in the article.

Any help would be appreciated. I am very much into calculating burial depths for large transmission poles and monopoles for cell sites.
