Cutting a bar in two at the assmbly level.

Cutting a bar in two at the assmbly level.

Cutting a bar in two at the assmbly level.

(OP)
I want to insert a beam into an assembly and then insert an assembly level cut that slices the beam into 2 pieces.  For instance I insert a 16" bar.  I then cut 4" out of the middle leaving two 6" bars with a 4" gap in the middle.  When I attempt this, it only leaves one side of the bar.  Is this working as intended, or am I doing something wrong?

Normally I would insert two 6" bars with a 4" distance mate inbetween and a concentric mate.  I just want to know if there is a way to achieve this by using a cut instead.

I am using SW2001+

RE: Cutting a bar in two at the assmbly level.

Seems like you are cutting from the end of the bar.
Create a sketch on a plane that is parallel to the bar. Make the sketch a rectangle and position where the cut will be, then extrude-cut.

Multibody parts are not possible in SW2001+.

Thanks for your input guys.

Ctopher; I am not cutting from the end.  I am creating a cut as you described (when I draw the sketch I am looking at the side of the bar).  One part of the bar, outside the rectangle, is taken with the cut.

KenBolen; I geuss I am just confused.  I figured that since I was cutting in the assembly level, I was not creating a multibody part.  I geuss I don't understand what SW is actually doing with the cut.

RE: Cutting a bar in two at the assmbly level.

Good point, I didn't think about that. I'm not really sure what SW is doing either.

RE: Cutting a bar in two at the assmbly level.

The problem is with 2001+ not allowing multi-body parts, even though you are not cutting at the part level.  I used to get "disjoint part" errors when making a cut-away section view in a drawing which would cut through the center of a part.

RE: Cutting a bar in two at the assmbly level.

Not sure if you get this prompt at the assembly level, but if you create this at the part level, it gives you a dialog box asking you which bodies to keep: "All Bodies", or "Selected Bodies".  With the "selected bodies" option, you only get the 6" part like in your problem.
