What are suitable materials for use in external pressure vessels.  Steel is ovbiously a good start but what types and grades are traditionally used in submarine construction??

RE: pressure vessel materials selection

There are two questions in your post. The answer to your first question is to review the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section II on ferrous materials. The list of ferrous materials in Section II contains approved materials for use in pressure containing components. You need to select the product grade and material composition for your specific application.

The second answer to your post can be found doing an internet search on "submarine hull material".

RE: pressure vessel materials selection

What do you mean by "external pressure vessel"? is it for aerospace use?

See:

MIL-STD-1522A STANDARD GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SAFE DESIGN AND OPERATION OF PRESSURIZED MISSILE AND SPACE SYSTEMS

See NASA MSC-SPEC-522B DESIGN CRITERIA FOR CONTROLLING STRESS CORROSION CRACKING. In this document NASA specifically recommend materials that can be used for pressure vessel and which don't due to stress corrosion sensitivity.

MSFC-STD-3029 replaced MSC-SPEC-522B

All above documents are available on the net.

RE: pressure vessel materials selection

Traditional material for submarine hull construction is armor plate HY80/HY100 (MIL-S-16216). Titanium has also  played a role in larger vessels and has greater external load capability.
