amendment and emendation

amendment and emendation

amendment and emendation

(OP)

Are these two words equivalent when used to indicate corrections or alterations to a written document ?

RE: amendment and emendation

Yes. They both have the same meaning.

RE: amendment and emendation

These two words share one definition which is "a change, or correction to text or document"; however, amendment has a meaning not shared by emendation which is "an addition to or an alteration to a motion, bill, or constitution".  So these words are not completely interchangeable.

RE: amendment and emendation

Sort of like "ensure" and "insure".  Similar - misused a lot - but different.

RE: amendment and emendation

(OP)

Techmaximus, if I correctly understood your explanation, rider could also be used as synonym to amendment in its added context. Right ?

RE: amendment and emendation

I've learned a new word today - first time I have ever heard of "emendation".  Is it a US based term, or have others outside the US of A heard of it?  Sounds like the amendment a mendicant would make

Life is non-linear...

RE: amendment and emendation

Rider can be used as synonym to amendment in its "added" context. Correct.  That's how i read it.

RE: amendment and emendation

New to me too, Bung. I'm in the US. Then again, I had to look up mendicant too.
