Material replacement 17-4 SS

Material replacement 17-4 SS

Material replacement 17-4 SS

(OP)
The current pins are manufactured from 4130 hardened to 125K psi and cadmium plated.  I am thinking of replacing them with 17-4  stainless steel in the H1150 condition. The machinists tell me they can turn them just fine in this condition.  I can purchase the stainless steel in this condition already thus avoiding heat treating costs and plating costs.  The stainless steel cost more but is offset by the savings for time, treating and plating.  The pins will be in contact with very slow intermittent rotating arms of three different types of material. SAE 660 bronze, 2024 aluminum and 4130N. Are there any problems with this design that I’m not seeing? I don’t think galling will at all be a problem? The yield strength of the stainless steel is slightly higher and so is the hardness.

Input and experience please.
Thanks all.

RE: Material replacement 17-4 SS

Wear resistance will not be as good with 17-4 PH as it would be with quenched & tempered 4130 that has a martensitic microstructure.  If galling is not likely to be a problem, then it sounds like a good idea to pursue.

RE: Material replacement 17-4 SS

PH Stainless requires Passivation after machining.

I think I'd consider the added cost of a coating similar to xylan just to ease my mind about wear resistance and galling.
