too many assemblies? why won't they move?

too many assemblies? why won't they move?

too many assemblies? why won't they move?

(OP)
This is a repeat of "assembly motion constraints" post. No one would answer and i really need to know!!! Please help me work this out.

I have created a rack and pinion assembly with a right angle drive, shaft and hand wheel.
In the assembly itself, the mechanisms all work properly..............there is a 1:1 ratio (motion constraint) for the movement of the two shafts in the right angle drive, there is a tangent relation from the rack to the pinion, and there is a motion constraint from the end of the rack to the pinion, (so that each turn of the pinion creates 3" of linear motion in the rack.

Everything works perfectly.

When i pull this assembly into a bigger assembly it stops working..............even if i make the assembly adaptive.

Can someone let me know what i am doing wrong and why i can't get this assembly to operate.

P.S. there is a similar rack and pinion assembly in the model that DOES work. The second assembly comes in without the adaptive option. WHY????
thanx for any help!!!!!

RE: too many assemblies? why won't they move?

You can only have one copy of an assembly adaptive within another assembly. (if that makes any sense) If you have a rack & pinion assembly, say sub #1 and make that adaptive, you cannot have two copies of the same sub assembly within one assembly idependently adaptive. You probably have one version constrained in a way which is restricting the movement of the other sub.

Try to do a "save copy as" and replace one of the instances to open some flexibility.

Also, R9 has "flexible representations" etc which would give you more options....I don't use this feature very much, so I'm probably not a lot of help.

thanx for the response mike.
I suppose i wasn't clear in my explanation.
I have 2 completely different movable assemblies (subs) in the main assembly. when i bring in the second assembly it doesn't work and the menu will not allow me to change it to adaptive. Nothing about the second assembly needs to be adaptive except that it should operate. I mean nothing stretches etc.
I'm working on V8. I (sort of) get that only one sub can be adaptive, but, even if i turn the first one off, I am not given the option to turn on the second.
I would like to animate this when i am done. I have a 10" vertical lift, +/- 20 degrees horizontal angular displacement, 0-30 degree vertical angular displacement, 12" "x" movement, and 8" "y" movement.  Funny enough, .....I would like to get ALL the mechanisms working in the model at the same time.

Open the second assy and go to tools>document settings and uncheck the "use adaptivley in assembly" and save.

thanx sean!!!

I opened the offending assemblies. Saved as per your instructions and re-opened the model. I did lose some constraints but, after re-postioning AND making the assemblies adaptive in the larger assembly everything is working tickety-boo.

thanx again, tim

RE: too many assemblies? why won't they move?

...Yeah, what Sean said!

I have to write that down. I have ran into that twice before and keep forgetting what the solution is.

tmox,

In the main assy. If you right click the sub assy file you can check "Flexable" and the motion constraints in that assy will be usable.
