weld on single part?

weld on single part?

weld on single part?

(OP)

I frequently design bentup sheetmetal parts where I want to seam weld corners of flanges of a single part.

RE: weld on single part?

I don't have your answer but that is a good question.  I work with sheet metal every day but we don't show our welds on our models or drawings, we cover it with detailed notes instead, but I have often wondered how one would go about doing this.

I am hoping someone here knows the answer too.

Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. And scratch where it itches.

RE: weld on single part?

Like aamoroso I normally just call up the weld with an annotation. Weld symbols could also be used.

If you really  have to show the actual weld, the best way might be to add the SM part into an assy, then add extrusions for the welds.

RE: weld on single part?

You could show a representation of a weld in a drawing.  Insert > Annotations > Caterpillar > pick a line.  You will have a choice of a full length weld, or intermittent, but the length for intermittent is not very flexible.

Thank you all for your suggestions.  I also deal with this at the drawing level with weld notes.  If there was a direct way to do this I am sure you would know about it

I may suggest this feature as an Enhancement Request for future upgrades.

RE: weld on single part?

A method that has not been mentioned yet that I have used in the past is to model the welds in the part as extrusions.  As long as these "weld" features are inserted after the flat pattern feature, they will not affect the un-folding of the sheet metal part.  It is a little more tedius than automatic weld insertion through assemblies, but it works.  You will probably also want the welds to be separate bodies, that way sections and other views look more correct.
