Weldments and Assemblies

Weldments and Assemblies

Weldments and Assemblies

(OP)
I have designed a modular platform, basically three different weldments that I brought into an assembly. I would like to take that assembly and create, using weldments, a safety railing and then a corresponding drawing. Not sure if this is possible, has anyone done something similar? Thanks.

RE: Weldments and Assemblies

I don't use weldments but ...

Are you saying that you have tried to & it doesn't work?

If you haven't tried it, why do you have doubts about being able to do it?

Why not just try it & see?

COR

I have not been able to get it to work on the assembly. I could have made each module with the railing but it would make it cleaner and easier to fabricate if I could show it on the assembled platform. I may have to create it like I did the modules and add it to the assembly.

The value of this forum for me, and I check it daily, is that I'm a one-man-show. I can't holler over to the guy in the next office and ask a dumb question, I have to post it here. So thanks for the response.

RE: Weldments and Assemblies

if you insert a new component into the assy, create the sketch in the assy, then open the new component outside of the assy and create the weldment.  when you save and close the railing, it should update in the assy from just a sketch to the weldment.

Thanks Heckdogg,

I'll give it a try.

Scott,

Is it as simple as saving the assembly as a part and adding my 3D sketch? I have done that but I don't get the option of being able to create the library feature, it only gives me a cut extrude option. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Weldments and Assemblies

Try it, but I don't think that is the best way to build it, not even sure it will work. You will not get FM tree data which you will need when you go to make your Cut-lists.

I would start over and build the file from scratch.

Thanks Scott,

I was afraid I had worked my way into a corner.

I want to repeat my sentiments from my earlier post that this forum is a big help to someone who sits alone. And a big "Thank You" to all who sit out there and field all these questions.

RE: Weldments and Assemblies

I'm a novice user, so I'm probably not understanding the question, but why couldn't you build the railing as a part separate from your weldments and then assemble it as you do the other parts?

RE: Weldments and Assemblies

(OP)
GBor,

That's the process I'm doing now. It would be a lot easier to have the assembly to work with as I "installed" the railing around the existing weldments. Not having those references makes it necessary to measure and build a little blind. I actually started making this all one piece but for shipping purposes we needed to make it modular. It was poor planning on my part that's why it's always good to sit back and think before you start ripping into a project.

I'll learn.... eventually.

RE: Weldments and Assemblies

If you try Heckdogg's suggestion, what you will be doing is working in a new part file while inside the assembly.

My preferred method would be to create a rough "close enough" part file of the rail, insert it into your assembly and mate into place, then edit the sketch driving the weldment while still in the asembly.  That way you can have the references to the assembly.

Look up "top-down" in the help files as well as this forum.  Understand how "in-context references" work (another good term to search on) before you end up painting yourself into a corner.  Another good term is "circular references" - something you want to avoid.
