EXplosion grade of Lighting fitting

EXplosion grade of Lighting fitting

EXplosion grade of Lighting fitting

(OP)
The certifcate of lighting fitting says 'EXe II BT5' as per IEC. This lighting fitting is to be installed in cargo hold as Zone I.
Q.1 : My understanding is that either EXe- or Exd- can be installed in Zone I area. Is it correct ?
Q.2 : The gas group of EXe II BT5 comply with IIA, IIB, and IIC or does not comply with any gas group ?

RE: EXplosion grade of Lighting fitting

Q1 - Exe components can be installed in Zone 1 [ref IEC 60079-14:2002 Sect 5.2.2]
Q2 - IIB equipment can be installed in Group IIA and IIB but not Group IIC [ref section 5.4]

Increased safety components are usually (but not always) marked without a gas group, as in Ex e II T5.

Thanks TMD
Note EXe II BT5 mentioned my first post should have been worded to EXe II T5.(concering no gas group)
You are saying that Increased safety component is marked without gas group.
1. why gas group is not marked usually ?
2. If EXe II T5 is marked, it means it complys with all gas group or not comply with any gas group ? This is very interesting to me ?
3. if Flourecent lighting fixture is Exe II T5, it is acceptable to Zone 1 ?

RE: EXplosion grade of Lighting fitting

The fitting should also have an ATEX nameplate.

The ATEX nameplate should read "II 2 G" or "II 1 G" if the fitting is suitable for a Zone 1 area.

You are correct, normally increased safety apparatus is suitable for a Zone 1 area.

As a matter of interest who is the manufaturer of the fitting. Usually luminaires for Zone 1 are rated Exed or Exd while Exn is available for Zone 2 areas

RE: EXplosion grade of Lighting fitting

shkim2000,

1. why gas group is not marked usually ?
2. If EXe II T5 is marked, it means it complys with all gas group or not comply with any gas group ? This is very interesting to me ?

This means these are allowed only in all Gas group GII locations and not in Gas Group I locations like mines
per IEC concept.

Increased safety concept means "No Sparks or Arcs produced" by its design itself. So there is no necessicity to specify IIA,B or C gases seperately. If you donot use in mines then Ex e covers the whole Group II. But not the surface temperature. Eventhough the arcs and sparks are NOT produced, internal parts can develop enough heat to violate the temperature class.

Thanks
I understand Exe-.
I'd like to consider to select type of luminares to be located in cargo hold of container carrier. Selection guide on luminare vendor website tells me that Exd or Exe can be used in Zone 1 but seanmx tells me EXed or EXd.
Why Exed is required for luminare ? I think that Exe could be acceptable as there no sparks. Am I wrong ?

RE: EXplosion grade of Lighting fitting

I'm not familar with the rules for luminaires, but let me add this for clarification/education:

Ex means certified to IEC 60079 series standards
EEx means certified to European norm standards, EN500xx series

d = flameproof (for sparking devices, like a switch)
e = increased safety (for non-sparking devices, like a junction box)
de = combined flameproof with a increased safety (like a switch with a junction box - need Ex d bushings to get from one enclosure to another.

ATEX (complying with European Directive 94/9/EC) has it's own markings.

It is not clear to me why luminare requires Exed-. Can you please explain further ? Exe lighting fixture is problem in Zone I ?
