Find instance qty within assembly

Does anybody know of a way to tally up the total quantity of instances of a part model within an assembly model.  Is there a macro or API application that can do such a thing.  Ideally it would work as follows:
User would type in model name, and the application would count the number of times that part exists within the assembly and all subassemblies.

I know I could count the parts by creating a non-indented BOM, even exporting it to excel.

Just wondering if there is a way to do it without going through the process of creating a drawing just to generate a BOM.

I think this will work.  I may be able to modify it to get exactly what I need.

Thanks CBL.
