creating a shape like twisted soft serve twirl

creating a shape like twisted soft serve twirl

(OP)
I've been struggling with creating a shape that looks like a Mr. Softee twirl on top of a hemesphere. I first tried doing it with solids and finally, using surfaces, i've got the shape down (using surfaces is fairly new to me). I basically swept two quarter circles around a helix that tapers. If I used a semi circle (instead of 2 quarter circular shapes... the shape intersected itself and caused rebuilding errors. My struggle now is how to trim the pieces of the twirl that have extended to the inside of the twirl shape. when I go to pick trim surfaces I'm having to pick the surface I actually want to remove. My goal is to clean it up, make a solid out of the part so I can then shell it. Maybe there is another way to build the part... but I wanted to check for any suggestions with what I've got so far. If you go here, I've posted a picture ....... http://img130.echo.cx/img130/4421/twist6ww.jpg.

If anyone is willing to take a look at the actual part file... I'd be happy to send it to you.

Thanks very much for any suggestions/help.

John

RE: creating a shape like twisted soft serve twirl

Have you tried creating a solid cone & doing swept-cuts to remove the parts you dont want? Much like a sculptor would do. Then you would be left with a solid which is easily shelled.

Something that may be useful to you is looking at some one-surfaced wonders at this website: http://www.mikejwilson.com/solidworks/solidworks_files-03.htm

With a little tweaking you can probably manipulate one of the free downloaded models to your liking.

Hope this helps.

Could you not fill the i.d. using a rotation or extrude, then shell from the solid?  I.e. don't bother removing the inner surfaces, just fill it in.

RE: creating a shape like twisted soft serve twirl

Using the part you have created, could you create a continuous surface from the external shape and then thicken it to give your finished product?

thanks for the good suggestions....I'm still fiddling with it with a variety of (hopeful) solutions..... The suggestion of CorBlimey's of starting with a solid and removing material seems like it might work with a bit of tweaking after the initial shape is generated.  Someone had suggested that before, I tried it but couldn't get any decent results.  After CB suggested it again... I tried it again with some better luck.  Thanks again... I'll keep you posted.  It would seem to be an easy shape to make.... but ... it's actually turning into something fairly challenging.
