On the website of SpiraxSarco, which normally is an excellent source of information, I have read that due to their design, tilting disc check valves were limited to liquid applications only.

This information was new to me. Moreover, in the past various vendors have supplied me with tilting disc check valves, although the inquiry specs clearly stated operation in gas or steam service. Does anybody have further details or operational experience which verifies the limitation mentioned above?

you should rather use non-slam types of check valves,Dual-Plates for instant, for your gas and steam applications

The tilting disc, swing disc, and dual plate check valves can have the problem of flappers that could oscillate or flutter in the flow stream when the flow or pressure drop does not keep the flapper in the full open position. The flapper pivot and shaft is quickly worn down. Failure can occur by shaft breakage, pivots binding, and even loss of flapper. The sizing of the check valve becomes more important with lower density (less Dp) vapor, gas, or steam flows. The Sarco tilt disc checkvalves might have been sized for condensate flows and would probably need different sizing for steam flow. The dual plate check valves with their lighter flappers and return springs generally have less flow required to maintain full open position.
