These ones and those ones

These ones and those ones

These ones and those ones

(OP)
If a person were sorting, say, jelly beans, that peron may end up with two piles.  The person may then say that "these ones are red and those ones are green".  Why the "ones"?  "These are red and those are green" is sufficient.  Is this common or just something Canadian?  I've heard it on the national news, so it's not just local.

RE: These ones and those ones

If, in conversation, it is accepted ones signify plural, these and those are added for good measure

RE: These ones and those ones

Definitely not limited to Canadians.  Residents of the USA use "ones" frequently.

Cory

RE: These ones and those ones

It sounds correct, but sort of archaic - as if each jelly bean is a single item, and there are multiple items in each pile.
Also related, "We have 3 units out on the road", meaning 3 motor vehicles. Now, a unit implies one. Isn't it obvious? After all, the 3 vehicles are not each a pair.

RE: These ones and those ones

"this one" and "that one" are uncontroversial.  Maybe "these ones" and "those ones" are extensions of that.

RE: These ones and those ones

Hg,
Sounds like "those ones" are related to "bofems" (both of thems).
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Also, I heard on the radio that most NASCAR fans do not know what NASCAR stands for. Any opinions?

RE: These ones and those ones

I took a survey in the toolroom and learned...
a) 60% knew the acronym
b) 30% were pretty close
c) 10% don't watch racing
d) 100% thought I should come up with a better way to spend my time!
By the way, while "those ones" and "these ones" are gramatically correct, both phrases express redundancy and are considered improper for technical communications.
Let's stick to "bofems"!

schnipp,
Excellent..will need to remember those.
Actually, I think that radio survey was bogus- I think most fans know the meaning of NASCAR. What I don't get is: they aren't really "stock" cars at all...they were probably modified stock cars in years past, but no way they are stock now.

What's a NASCAR fan look like? Well, shirtless, hairy back, and spits tobacco juice....and if you think that's bad....then you should see her husband!

RE: These ones and those ones

SacreBleu,
Ever see the pic of the hairy dude with the big 3 shaved in his back???  Priceless telling of some of their fans.

RE: These ones and those ones

Hey schnipp & Bleu,

Are ya' makin fun o' me or are you'nes just jealous?

"Stock" means the parts are available to the general public.  We have NASCAR to thank that we can walk into any Advance Auto and get any part we need right off the shelf.  No complaints from me.
