noise control

noise control

(OP)
Hi, in the application I'm designing, there is a mechanism where a small metal piece strike another metal piece at a maximum speed of 1 m/s.

This will a create a sound. I wonder if it's possible to coat the metal piece with some kind of material (like rubber, or something better) that'll muffle the sound of the impact.

And finally, enclose the whole thing in a house that'll further decrease the sound to the outside.

What are my options? I wish to make it inaudible to a human operator.

Thanks

RE: noise control

For the metal coating you could try something like V-Damp from Daubert Chemical.  It will deaden any ringing from the metal-to-metal contact.  As far as the house, there are many materials to choose from.  You will likely want to use a absorber and reflector in combination.  The reflector will bounce the sound around inside the enclosure and the absorber will remove it (turn it into heat).

Hope this helps!

RE: noise control

The two metal pieces,  the striker and the piece which is struck,  could be made of a sandwich construction using viscous damping material between layers of metal.  This would minimize ringing I think.
