RE: removal of gases iin electric arc furnaces

Depending on the steel and your refining and casting practices, various methods can be employed.  Aluminum, calcium, and silicon are all deoxidizers for "killed" steels which can be added at various stages.

The links provided above are fairly good resources.  I'll add one more:

http://www.aist.org/

This is a link to the Association for Iron and Steel Technology.  They have an extensive publication listing, including books on melting and casting.  Search their book store under "melting", "steel", and "casting" for various titles.  The book "The Making, Shaping, & Treating of Steel - Steelmaking/Refining" may be a good source.

Good luck with your search for knowledge.
